The United Nations reinstated economic sanctions on Iran on Saturday after a ten-year pause, as a result of several European countries failing to uphold the nuclear deal.

The reintroduction of sanctions could cause Tehran to distance itself from international observers, leading to a significant drop in the value of the Iranian rial compared to the US dollar. This has resulted in higher prices for essential goods like rice, meat, and fuel.

The blockades were scheduled to conclude on October 18, but the initial agreement, referred to as JCPOA (Global Joint Action Plan), permitted any participating nation to reimpose sanctions ahead of the deadline if they believed the Western Asian country had failed to uphold its nuclear program restrictions. The arrangement was endorsed by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

Iran described the action as “unjustified” and urged other nations to refrain from enforcing the imposed measures, such as arms embargo, asset freezing, and banking constraints associated with nuclear and ballistic programs, according to Times Brasil.

The Country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the action is based on legal grounds and does not alter the civilian nature of Iran’s nuclear program. The chancellery emphasized that their actions are not aimed at military purposes.

The ECFR acknowledges that the economic consequences of UN and EU sanctions on Iran would be minimal compared to the severe US restrictions. However, a potential issue for Iran could arise if a future nuclear deal resulted in the removal of UN sanctions, as it is uncertain if the European Union would support such a move.

Iranian officials have previously stated that if sanctions were reinstated, Tehran would stop cooperating with IAEA inspections. Some officials also indicated that the reimposition of UN sanctions could result in Iran withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, thus ending international scrutiny of its nuclear activities.

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, reportedly stated that Iran plans to withdraw from the NPT in response to the reinstatement of UN sanctions.

Iran engaged in a 12-day conflict with Israel in June, enduring attacks from both Israeli and US military forces. The status of Iran’s nuclear program is now uncertain following US air strikes on its primary nuclear facility, although Tehran maintains that its program is for peaceful purposes.

What are the fees?

European representatives informed the UN Security Council in August that Iran had breached most of its obligations outlined in the JCPOA and that Europe was getting ready to reinstate sanctions.

The Council gave Iran a one-month notice before Russia assumed the presidency in October.

Several meetings and phone conversations were held with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other Iranian officials in the past month, but none resulted in progress on the key demands of European parties.

  • Iran is showing readiness to seek a diplomatic resolution.
  • Adhere to the regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
  • They represent more than 400 kg of highly enriched uranium.

European nations are also interested in seeing Iran resume talks with the US, which were halted during President Donald Trump’s first term and replaced by a strategy of imposing sanctions on Iran known as “maximum pressure.”
