Toyota employees in Sorocaba, São Paulo, agreed on Sunday to the company’s layoff plan following the closure of operations due to damage from a storm.

96.28% of voters supported the company’s proposal, as reported by the Sorocaba and Region Metallurgical Union. The agreement will be effective after a 20-day emergency holiday starting on 1 October 2025, impacting around 4,500 workers.

The layoff will start on October 21 and could last for up to 150 days.

Workers have been assured that all employees earning a gross salary of up to R $ 10,000 will retain 100% of their net payment during the layoff period.

“We managed to achieve significant successes despite challenges, like ensuring full PPR payment and job security throughout the layoff phase. This outcome demonstrates the category’s trust in the Union’s efforts and reinforces our dedication to protecting rights and employment,” stated Leandro Soares, SMetal’s president.
